On The Biggest Loser last night:
"I've never had a child, but the pain is probably worse than giving birth."
Have you ever noticed that whenver the second part of the phrase ("the pain is worse than giving birth") is uttered, it is almost always preceeded by the first part ("I've never had a child, but"). Do people ever wonder that it is always people who have not given birth that go around comparing things to what birth feels like?

I've given birth at home without medication and I've passed kidney stones (another one of those "but" comparisons) and I want to tell you that trying to codify pain is nuts.
Have you ever been in an ER trying to decide which of the Unhappy Faces describes your pain the most? How can you tell? Is this pain, right now, the absolute worst pain you're ever going to feel...the one that will drive you to the screaming-meemie, end-of-the-chart 00000000AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH!!!! mouth, tears and all? Why are they wasting precious time; why aren't they giving me A PAINKILLER rather than the third-degree?
If I pick the wrong face, will I get nothing? If I pick the wrong face will I get morphine or will I be sent home with a bottle of 5 mg. Oxycontin and a "Good night and have a lovely tomorrow"?
It hurts. Help me. Hold my hand if I can't take anything; give me something to make the pain less if I can.
Don't try to make comparisons, for when you're in pain, it's what's happening now that counts, not pains perdu.

Much luck with this blog, RR!

Exactly. Why the need to compare one painful experience with another? Do I get a gold star if my experience is more painful than yours?
